This is a beautiful 1964 pre-cbs Fender Jazz Bass, considered by many to be a holy grail of electric basses. This example has been lovingly played and maintained by the same owner for the last 30 years, I am proud to have it in the shop and help find its next caretaker. In 1964 things at Fender were going better than ever. Sales had taken off and the company had streamlined their production methods prior to their sale to CBS in 1965. The Jazz bass was first introduced in 1960 as a upscale alternative to the Precision which was the only electric bass and had already been on the market for eight years. It offered a sleek “offset” body, a slimmer 1 1/2” nut, and two single coil pickups that could be blended for a variety of tones.

This Jazz bass has all the features typical for the year including clay dot inlays, unbound fretboard, and a 3 color “target” burst. The stamp on the neck heel dates it to May of ’64. Pots are from ’64. The neck pickup bobbin is black and the bridge pickup bobbin is grey, which is often seen on examples from this transitional period for Fender. This is one of the best sounding and playing Jazz basses I’ve handled, the original pickups have tons of clarity and flexibility. The neck is straight with no kickup at the heel allowing for nice low action. It has been fully gone over and is ready to be taken out on its next gig. It comes complete with pickup covers and the rare original white tolex hard shell case.
