Larson instruments were made by two brothers, Carl and August Larson, in Chicago IL. They are not as well known to modern audiences likely because they never built guitars under their own name. They were often made under brand names such as Stahl, Maurer, Dyer, and Prairie State. The quality of construction and tone is equal to that of their larger competitors, Martin and Gibson.
This fantastic Prairie State Model 425 is roughly the same body size as the more familiar Martin 000. It has a distinctive tone that sets it apart from Martins or Gibsons, somewhere between a flattop and archtop guitar. It has the immediate attack of an archtop paired with the longer sustain of a flattop. The top is a tight grained Adirondack spruce, the center seam has been repaired. The back and sides are very nice straight grained Brazilian rosewood, no cracks. The tuners are newer Waverlys. One of the nicest pre-war flattops out there.
