This is the goldilocks of Gibson SG Specials. It has all of the most desirable features most players would want in an SG with none of the issues.  It features the wider 1 11/16" nut which provides ample room for playing chords. In response to the trend of guitar manufacturers moving towards slimmer necks in the mid '60s, Gibson started using the 1 5/8" nut around mid 1965. Another feature which is surprisingly difficult to find, is the simple wraparound stop tailpiece. Gibson offered a variety of vibrato tailpieces, unfortunately they were not the most stable for tuning which is why many of them have been removed over the years, leaving unsightly holes in the top. This one is an original stop tail so it does not have any additional holes drilled. There are none of the breaks/repairs that plague most of the SG's on the market. No breaks or cracks at the heel and no headstock repair! As a bonus, it has the most beautiful unfaded deep cherry finish I've ever come across. The red color Gibson used fades easily in the sunlight so it is not uncommon to see SGs with light tops and dark backs (most likely displayed near a window). To find one that has retained its original color is very rare.
