We're very excited to receive this pair of custom ordered Nuvo basses from R. Hyde! The idea for these instruments was first planted when we both moved into the Bok building in 2023, it is amazing to see them come to life. The Nuvo is a short scale bass that combines mid century atomic age aesthetic with meticulous hand craftsmanship.  We wanted to make it feel completely solid by having as few moving parts as possible. A floating carved wenge bridge with aluminum cap was used to maximize the transfer of energy into the body, similar to an archtop guitar. The string through body design also increases sustain. Nordstrand NM4 pickups were used and the half for the low E and A strings was placed closer to the bridge to optimize the balance between the strings. Both basses feature matching headstocks and are finished with nitrocellulose lacquer which will age beautifully over time. The result is a lightweight, compact bass with a strong midrange tone like a great vintage precision.

The two models have the same body design but with different neck profiles. The idea was to have the shell pink version feel more like a precision and the seafoam green to feel more like a jazz. The shell pink Nuvo has a wider 1 11/16" nut width and beefy C profile measuring 0.90" at the first fret. The bigger neck gives it more rigidity and further improves the transfer of string energy into the body. The seafoam green Nuvo has a sleeker 1 9/16" nut also with a depth of 0.90" at the first fret. To top it all off, the shell pink model was strung with flatwounds to complete the retro feel and the seafoam green with rounds for a more modern feel and all around versatility.

The Nuvo is a short scale bass that offers huge retro vibes and tone.  The Nuvo’s unique silhouette and numerous details pay homage to vintage instruments, while establishing an identity all its own.  The tone is full, detailed and strongly reminiscent of your favorite P-bass.  You’ll find the Nuvo is surprisingly lightweight and balances well when sitting or standing.  A shorter scale length, robust C-shape neck and excellent fretwork all combine to create a comfortable playing experience.  Handmade in Philadelphia PA by luthier Ryan Hyde.
